Entrance to Sandpiper Cove & Louisiana Lagniappe
Sandpiper Cove was constructed in 1973. It went through around 20+ phases before it’s final completion in 2000. Today it holds over 600 condominium units, 5 pools, a 9 hole par 3 golf course, 2 on site restaurants (ah’hem Louisiana Lagniappe), 6 tennis courts, and of course, it’s beautiful beaches AND canal access. Not only is Sandpiper Cove a resort with plenty of amenities, it embodies “Old Florida” and what “use to be” before the high-rise craze that ensued after the construction of hwy 98 – which changed Destin from that “sleepy fishing village” to the highly sought after tourist destination that it is today. Many of the owners are original owners or second generation Sandpipers. Because of that, it’s engagement with the local community and it’s strict policy on age limits and overall policy on “foolishness”, has made it a wonderful place for families to vacation.
It also has a little something for everyone – especially families. Not only can you stay at Sandpiper Cove, but you can arrive by way of boat and have a place to park it while you stay. Of course, like most of us, you can drive there and still take advantage of the water access it provides by utilizing Destin’s Water Taxi or simply relaxing on the beaches. {Note: There are very few communities in Destin that offer a harbor AND a private beach, if any}

The Water Taxi – Holiday Isle’s best kept secret!
You can dine at one of Destin’s top 10 restaurants – The Louisiana Lagniappe – and enjoy one of the amazing creole inspired dishes all while watching the sunset overlooking Sandpiper’s Canal. You could also choose to stay in your swim suit and flip flops and walk up to Rick’s Sandtrap for arguably some of the best burgers and fish tacos in Destin. (Oh, and you can watch the sunset from there too since it’s ON the beach).

Rick’s Sandtrap on the beach at Sandpiper Cove
If you want to take a short walk up Gulf Shore Drive (not hwy 98…none of this requires that) then you can check out a fantastic lunch and drink spot called The Local Market. They make fresh juices and awesome Avocado Toast. If you’re into coffee then a must is Cafe Capriccio. Not only is the coffee and espresso legit, they make amazing breakfast sandwiches on croissants. Nom.
Yes, we’re a little biased to Sandpiper Cove, but we aren’t oblivious to the many offerings it has for families and individuals looking for a nice (and affordable) beach retreat. We hope you’ll visit, and book with us soon.
